Hardwood timber will be harvested from plantations on Ringtail State Forest.
Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) forest products manager Dennis Rolfe says Ringtail State Forest had been harvested intermittently in the past, however, once harvesting of the plantation was completed, the area would be left to return to native forest.
"A minimum of 50 per cent of the trees will be retained in the plantation to facilitate a faster transition to native forest," Rolfe says.
"The particular approach to harvesting of this hardwood plantation is prescribed under the South East Queensland Forests Agreement (SEQFA), which requires the area to transfer to Queensland’s conservation estate following harvesting."
The transition of the native forest timber industry to a plantation based resource will occur by 2025.
Harvested timber harvested will be used for electricity poles, bridge girders and sawn timber.
