VICTORIAN Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Ben Hardman has launched three documents on fighting weeds and improving soil health in the Glenelg Hopkins region.
According to the Secretary, the documents include Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority’s (GHCMA) Soil Health Strategy, Regional Weed Plan and the ‘New Weeds of the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment’ booklet.
Hardman says weeds cost the Australian economy an estimated $4b annually from their agricultural impact and the four-year plan will help to prevent the introduction and establishment of new weeds in the Glenelg Hopkins region.
This follows the State Government recent funding of a four-year $4m weed control program on Melbourne’s outer urban fringe.
The Secretary for Agriculture says the weed booklet will prove to be an invaluable aid to property owners in identifying weeds and determining management options.
All documents were produced by Glenelg Hopkins CMA in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and industry representatives.
