QUEENSLAND Minister for Primary Industries (QPIF), Tim Mulherin says Biosecurity Queensland thwarted a new weed invasion early-August when the suspected Class 1 pest was discovered.
According to the Minister, the Class 1 cactus species 'Opuntia elata', and invasive weed was discovered in the south-western town of Morven.
The Minister says it is the second time in two months an invasive species of cactus has been eradicated, following on from the discovery of the Hudson Pear cactus near Charleville. This is the first time Opuntia elata has been found in Queensland.
Mulherin says the cactus is a native of Paraguay and a Class 1 declared noxious weed in Queensland, which means landholders are obliged to control and eradicate it. It also attracts a maximum penalty of $60,000 for deliberate movement or sale.
