QUEENSLAND Parliamentary Secretary for Employment and Economic Development, Jan Jarratt says ten Bundaberg jobseekers spent the last four weeks earning while learning as part of the State’s Green Army.
According to the Parliamentary Secretary, some of the recruits were the very first enlisted in Queensland are a example of what Queensland’s Green Army set out to achieve. Gaining skills and experience by undertaking a range of local environmental projects.
The Parliamentary Secretary says the recruits gaining landscaping and work skills were aged between 15 and 24. The State’s three-year $57m commitment to its Green Army provides jobs and skills for the unemployed and underemployed, raising awareness of environmental issues.
Jarratt says Bundaberg’s green areas, such as Saltwater Creek have been improved upon through the work the young team has completed since beginning their Green Army shift with IMPACT Make Your Mark on 31 July.
Through working in the Green Army, the team has undertaken a range of tasks including rubbish removal, revegetation and tree planting, which means they now have valuable skills and experience in horticulture and environmental rehabilitation.
IMPACT Make Your Mark is said to be working with the Bundaberg Regional Council, Burnett-Mary Regional Group, Bundaberg and District Landcare and Queensland Parks and Wildlife to ensure the tasks are targeted and beneficial to the participants as well as the broader community.
