LANDSCAPE designers are questioning whether the £200m (A$414.8m) of National Lottery funding made available for environmental projects across England is being well spent.
Horticultural academic Richard Bisgrove says there has been a general improvement in colour schemes in public spaces with harmonious planting but authorities could often be much bolder in their planting.
Bisgrove says there is much evidence that people are healthier in a green (landscaped) environment and in terms of funding and the use of public money landscaping is an investment rather than cost. Planting in public spaces is improving and in response to the lottery finding there has been a big resurgence of interest in Victorian gardens.
The planting day held at Victoria Park’s community garden is said to have been made possible by a £450k (A$933k) Lottery fund Changing Spaces grant given to the local landlord and Peabody Trust.
