QUEENSLAND Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF), Tim Mulherin says his department is working hard to exterminate a highly invasive cactus declared a Class 1 pest.
According to the Minister, the Mexican cactus has been found for the first time in south west Queensland and features spikes so sharp they can puncture car tyres.
The Minister says the sharp spines are capable of causing serious injury to humans, native animals, livestock and working animals such as horses and dogs. The spines have been known to penetrate footwear and even vehicle tyres.
Mulherin says a call was received from an Ergon Energy employee who believed he had found an infestation on a property west of Charleville and QPIF confirmed there are at least 100 Hudson pear plants at the site.
Smaller infestations have been found in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, South Australia, and at Mundubbera in Queensland.
