Ballast Point Park takes out sustainable landscape award

Ballast Point Park by McGregor Coxall has won the Landscape Design award in the 2009 BPN Sustainability Awards.

Judges said: "This project has completely revived a significant Sydney harbour landmark. It has not only decontaminated the remnants of the oil tanks, it has turned the landscape into a water cleanser."

The project in Birchgrove, Sydney, drew on the site's industrial past to create a park which reflected its history and also point it in a new direction in a sustainable future.

Initiatives at the project include: recycled aggregate for all drainage and broken concrete salvaged from the site used as flagging to reinstate degraded pathways; recycled timber for all decking; recycled soil and mulch for all garden areas; capture ponds delay and hold stormwater and releases; and over 34,000 endemic species planted.

The Highly Commended award was won by Guy Sturt & Associates for its Lorne Killara project in Killara, Sydney. The project used local and recycled products, which included the use of ‘Forest Fines’, a 100 per cent recycled wood waste for mulching all planting areas.

Finalists in the Landscape Design category included:

• Gaia House Project by Conlon Birrell
• Lilydale Memorial Park by Millar Merrigan
• Balgownie Estate Vineyard, Resort & Spa by Blackburne Jackson Design
• Crows Nest Centenary Park by Toowoomba Regional Council
